Start Your Own Indoor Herb Garden

Fresh herbs have an abundance of uses. Herbs likes basil and rosemary can be used to spice up meals and snacks. They may also help you maintain good health. Many herbs even fare well indoors, so start growing no matter what the season is.

Start by growing what you like. Herbs like basil, thyme, rosemary and mint are good for beginners. They will thrive on a sunny shelf or kitchen counter.

Basil is rich in potassium, calcium, vitamin K and vitamin A. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

Thyme is a great source of antioxidant compounds. It can be used for sore throats, upset stomachs and as a diuretic.

Rosemary is a staple in the kitchen. It’s great for adding flavor to meals and can also be used as a remedy for migraines, digestive problems and more.

Mint is rich in iron and vitamin C. Brewing tea with spearmint or peppermint can help ease digestive issues. Mint also possesses some anti-inflammatory powers.

How to get started:

  1. 1. Pick the proper containers. Pots should be at least four inches deep and have the proper drainage. You can put a plate or tray underneath to catch excess water.
  2. 2. Place them by a sunny window, door or on a patio.
  3. 3. Water herbs when the soil is dry. Too much water can drown them. Or it can attract nasty bugs and mildew.
  4. 4. Trim herbs regularly.
