5 Ways to Stay Social as You Age

Our social lives impact us both mentally and physically. As we age, it can be easy to slip into isolating habits, which can be harmful to our health. Social isolation has been linked to health conditions like high blood pressure, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease and more. Studies have even found that older people who visit friends on a daily basis are less likely to develop dementia than those who only visit friends every few months. In order to keep being our healthiest selves, it is important that we stay social as we get older. Here are five ways to help you socialize:

Volunteering not only brings structure to your schedule, but it also creates meaningful connections. Taking time to share your talents and knowledge with others is a great place to start.

2. Find a hobby

Hobbies are excellent ways to keep you occupied and create a strong social community. Find a pastime that you will enjoy and will help you meet other people.

3. Learn something new

Boost your mental health by learning a new skill or trade. Senior centers, community colleges and private businesses offer many classes in all different subjects to keep both your mind and social life active.

4. Travel

Traveling allows you to discover new cultures and meet new people. Carpooling is a great way to socialize while traveling as well. Going on tours and sightseeing can also help you stay physically active.

5. Use social media

Social media allows you to stay connected with family and friends without having to go anywhere. Many platforms can even help you meet new people that share the same interests as you.
